A 1998 Informational Interview with Patrick Combs

"My field is sooooooooo awesome for many reasons.

First of all, I am a professional speaker. I am self-employed and call my company (of three people) the Good Thinking Co. I can earn six figures. (For a thorough explanation of my starting salary (which is quite low), education and credentials go to my webpage http://www.goodthink.com/speaking/bio.cfm)

It's the best job in the world for many reasons. First of all, I'm doing meaningful and creative work. It feels meaningful to inspire people every day, and I feel the difference I'm making through kinds words, letters and emails that people send me. It feels creative because I write speeches, write columns, design webpages, create workshops, invent props, design brochures and posters, etc. From my side of the fence, it's hard to imagine working in a job where you only get praise once in a while, and you rarely ever get to see your creative ideas implemented.

It's also the best job because I have no boss. I boss myself around. I've been my own boss for many years now, and it's hard to imagine how other people deal with being told when they can and cannot take a vacation. It's hard to imagine hoping for a raise, instead of knowing better work will bring more money. It's awesome to know that all of my efforts come back to me 100%.

It's the best job in the world because I work from my home, or in a cafe, or on the beach.

Potential for advancement? The sky is the limit. The better I work, the higher go. My advancement is in nobody's hands but my own. I like that.

It's the best job in the world because I travel lots and lots - I've seen almost every major city in the United states because this career. And my traveling has resulted in friends every where.

It's the best job in the world because your hosts pay for you to stay in nice hotels, and you often are transported by limosine.

It's the best job in the world because it feels great to have your own published book that's in stores and touching peoples lives even while you rest.

It's the greatest job in the world because once you're established, people treat you with respect.

It's the great job in the world because there's tons of variety in your daily tasks.

I think if you value recognition, adventure, creativity, learning, independence, good karma, and a decent salary this is a great career for you. Caution, this job would probably suck if you valued a steady paycheck, a highly structured environment, a clearly defined path, teamwork, and comfort.

My feeling is that anyone can be a speaker if they are called by a burning desire, deep down inside, to say something to the world. To tell their story or to make their point. And as long as they're willing to persist, persist, and persist through a steep and sometimes humiliating learning curve, the will succeed.
