Patrick’s True Story, “In a Nutshell”:

In 1995 Patrick Combs deposited a $95,000 ‘non-negotiable’ check into now defunct, First Interstate Bank, as a joke. Instead of endorsing the instrument, which came to him in a junk mail letter, he drew a smiley face on the back to “cheer up banker.” First Interstate bank mistakenly cashed the faux check and then missed its legal deadline to notify Patrick of the mistake. What ensued was 6 months of history so outrageous it has been reported by the Who’s Who in world media and no less than 300 publications. In the end, despite being told by the leading authority in the U.S. on bank check law (author Henry Bailey) that the money was rightfully his to keep, Patrick returned the money, interest included, and served up a reminder to all watching that both customer-service and doing the right thing still matter.
